Gobinda Nandi

After completing his BA from the University of Kolkata, Gobinda continued his studies by undertaking a five year diploma course in painting from Swarsangam, the Educational Unit of Birla Academy of Art & Culture) in which he achieved first position in 2002. While studying for this diploma, he also did a one year life study course from Easel Chisel of the Indian Society of Oriental Art in the year of 1997-98, where he also stood first.
In the words of Gobinda Nandi, "My painting, as far as techniques are concerned, tend to give an impression in which a number of separate images, seemingly drawn in different frame of reference are collaged into a whole. I like using bright colors silhouetted by dark lines coupled with a few geometric shapes and figures to produce a visual effect of a web pattern texture in order to add a dimension to the composition. This textural pattern becomes a recurrent feature in all my sketches. In most of my recent works, a checker-board recurs as a signature to represent the uncertainty and suspense of the win-lose situation in which human beings are destined to be caught and the pieces, either the pawn or the king or both, are drawn as part of the composition and also as symbols of the calculated move to bring the expected pay off.
Many of my paintings are frequented by the image of a horse, some mythological and religious symbols, and stylized figures and creatures of legends and folklore as leit-motif to bring to the surface or appearance an interaction between the real and the surreal. The horse represents sometimes the psychic energy, sometimes the somatic energy or sometimes the potent sexual energy, ultimately to stand for motion. Finally in essence, my paintings tend to become an interplay of the three basic principles - the pleasure, the reality and the morality or the sleep, the dream and the waking. Most of my works remain untitled and sometimes are presented through mixed media for desired effect or expression".
