A Diploma holder in Painting from Indian College of Arts and Draftsmanship, Calcutta and a B.V.A (Fine Arts), Purnendu Das has been painting since early childhood.

"I was four, when I took the brush in my hands. I still remember how it started. Once when I was trying to draw on the slate, my Lt. Father came to me and he drew a female face on the slate. As far my memory goes this was the first time when I got very much attracted to drawing and as a child. This was the beginning of me, the artist.

That very image became my inspiration. I was growing... with the picturesque suburb of Kolkata around me. The Green fields, Deep blue Ponds, Birds, Mud-huts were the surroundings of my childhood. I used to go to a local school where one day my teacher found my mathematics notebook full of drawings. Every thing around me the surroundings, the people, the animals and the birds were my inspiration.

I was growing with my brush and canvas. I joined Indian College of Art and Draftsmanship of Kolkata, after college. I believe education is the necessary part of any field; it gives the required reasoning ability. I was fortunate enough to learn from some of the best teachers of that time, which helped me to manifest my inner perfection... to bring out the artist within me.

As I was finishing my course I was lucky enough to get inspired and blessings of some of the big names in the field of art like Lt. Sh Bikash Bhattacharya, Lt. Sh Shyamal Dutta Roy, and Sh Niranjan Pradhan. It was this time when, during an exhibition in Emerald Isle Gallery, Kolkata. Shri Bijon Chaudhry awarded me. That was a never forgetting moment of my life. My childhood dreams were coming true.

It was year 1996, I moved to New Delhi leaving behind my village. The dry land, scorching heat, and a different lifestyle everything touched me and reminded me of the vastness of my country. This too effected me which I introduced in my paintings too. I was in the capital of India... and was involved with the capitals art gallries. My circle was getting bigger and in year 1998 I joined a TV channel where I was the part of the team which used to design the on air look of the channel. This was my introduction to another kind of canvas that was not still. Every moment I was learning and still learning...

I feel that painting bridges the way one moves and the way rest of the world, the responsibility to strengthen that bridge inspires me to paint. The value of life is not by destroying the others life. The search of this very truth, which teaches to survive... is there in my all the paintings.

Within the nature we live without nature, where is our existence?... And for what do we live... with this curiosity I am still Painting."
