India and Art

India is a fascinating mosaic of varied colours, cultures, customs, traditions, faiths, beliefs, values and expressions. A diversity that owes its existence to the eternal Spirit of India which is to assimilate and enrich, guided by an abiding principle that everything, no matter how different, has its rightful place in the scheme of things under the Sun. Hence contradictions co-exist leading not to conflicts but to confluence. The contradictions coalesce to complete the whole.

This merger of opposites is the most striking feature of a nation that is a living, pulsating embodiment of pluralism. Nothing is rejected because of the belief that though Truth is singular its manifestations are many.  In no other field is this more apparent than in the field of Indian Visual Art.

Indian Visual Art is a universe in which several worlds exist simultaneously - classical, contemporary, folk and tribal. Time past, Time present and Time future. You’ll find them all. And their interpretations and expressions are endless, vibrantly alive covering a gamut of genres from painting to sculpture to handicrafts. And true to the Indian ethos their most defining feature is that they are all a part of life itself. That’s how they should be truly seen. Not as something to be hung on the wall or put on a pedestal. Rather as a joyous celebration of all that is true, all that is noble and all that is beautiful in life. No matter how simple and how elementary, the ecstasy of creativity is all pervasive. And it can be experienced even in the most contemporary Indian works of art where modernity and tradition coexist; the ancient and the recent complement each other.

It is this universe you are invited to explore in India Art Village.
