Untitled by Mrinal Dey

Buffalo trying to lick the moon. This watercolour painting by Mrinal Dey depicts a water buffalo, confined behind a fence attempting to reach for the moon, literally. The artist's intent in this work is open to interpretation.
The male buffalo in Hinduism is the vehicle for Yama, the God of Death and the crescent moon is one associated with Shiva, the destroyer or transformer in the Hindu Trinity. The painting reflects the artist's belief that situations are ever changing and unchanging.
