The Festive View by Sulagna Bhowmick Mukherjee

From the series artist Sulagna Bhowmick has painted on Chattah (Chhath ) Parva, an ancient hindu festival dedicated to the Sun God, Surya. This festival is celebrated primarily in the state of Bihar, Jharkhand and eastern UP at the beginning of winter, after the six days of Deepawali. In these paintings Sulagna depicts a whole panorama of images related to the festival people moving towards the river banks, offerings for the god, the music, sugarcane stalks, banana trees and the boats. The decorations, the deep vermilion and orange on the heads and foreheads of the devoted ladies showing their deep faith towards the sublime Sun God and the goddess of the festival (Chattah), and of course the colours spread out under the setting sun. These varied images work together to create a dramatic look and aura which is the central theme and inspiration behind the representation in this series. Sulagna has put her stamp on these paintings with her fluid brush strokes and vibrant use of colour.
